I founded the group, Gather To Talk, after the election to organize, host, and facilitate quarterly
salons for community members. The motivation behind founding Gather To Talk was to create
situations for community members to engage in meaningful conversion with those they might not normally get a chance to speak with. My hope is to build stronger relationships throughout the community, while also gaining a more nuanced understanding of critical issues facing our world today by listening and learning from those with a variety of viewpoints, life experiences, value systems, and perspectives.
Gather To Talk Events have taken place on January 8th, March 12th, and May 7th, 2017.
Upcoming Gather To Talk events are scheduled for:
October 18th, 2017
January 21st, 2018
April 16th, 2018
July 21st, 2108
at The View of The World Gallery in Boulder.
What has come out of these Gather To Talk events for me, as a participant, was the need to be more directly involved in my community. Since our first Gathering on January 8th, I have:
- Become a member of an Immigration Rights Policy Group with The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, working with County Commissioners to advocate for undocumented residents.
- Teaching English to a young woman from Mexico, 2 times a week, with Intercambio.
- Working with a local organization in town, Allies for Immigration and Religious Justice in Boulder Valley, to support DACA recipients currently attending The University of Colorado, and helping undocumented residents obtain driver's licenses.
